5 Common Two-Way Radio Problems (and How to Fix Them)

Posted on: May 6, 2022 By: Kelcom Admin

Two-way radios are powerful tools that help keep your teams connected and communicating.

They help increase productivity and safety and foster faster decision-making while reducing downtime.

It is important for every two-way radio user to understand the basics of how these devices work.

However, in the unlikely event that your investment breaks, do you know what to do?

Some of the common two-way radio problems described below are easily fixed, while others require the help of a two-way radio technician.

Here are the top four common problems you may experience with your two-way radio as well as the solutions.

Problem: The Radio is Making a Beeping Sound
Solution:

A radio persistently beeping is an intrusive alert to one of a few possible problems. This beeping is often heard when a battery is nearly dead. If that is the case, try charging the battery to see if that solves the problem. You can also try changing the battery for one that is fully charged. If the problem continues, it may mean that the batteries are reaching their end-of-life and need replacing. If this is the case, contact one of our two-way radio experts. We will check the date codes on your batteries and offer replacement pricing.

Problem: The Radio May Be Set to Transmit Mode
Solution:

Another reason your radio is making a beeping sound is if your microphone is set to transmit mode. If this is the problem, try disconnecting the accessory and reconnecting it. You can also try to turn your two-way radio on and off.

Your radio may also be set to a channel that is not programmed. If this is the case, try switching the transmission to an active channel with users.

A source of a poor transmission could be a broken or bent two-way radio antenna.

Problem: People on the Channel are Having Difficulties Hearing Your Transmission
Solution:

If others are having trouble hearing what one radio is transmitting, it could be the result of a damaged, bent or broken antenna. If so, check the antenna for any kinks, bends or scuffing. If you find any of these things, it may be time to order a replacement antenna. These parts are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

Problem: Poor Audio Quality is Coming Out of the Radio Speaker
Solution:

The speaker grill protects the speaker and microphone from dust and debris. Over time, the grill may collect a buildup, particularly when used in industrial settings.

Airborne dust and metal filings can clog up the speaker grill and cause performance issues. Carefully wiping down the grill will ensure the speaker and microphone both work optimally.

To fully protect the radio, use a custom-fitted carrying case which will protect it from build-up. Periodically, you should also get your investments professionally cleaned such as by our two-way radio experts.

Problem: The Radio Has Poor Reception
Solution:

It’s important to keep radios and their antennae pointing vertical. Setting your radio down in this way decreases its signal capability by about half.
Portables are meant to stand upright. Setting them down on the floor or the seat of a vehicle will dramatically affect coverage.

Conclusion

This article covered some of the most common two-way radio problems including beeping two-way radios, dust build-up as well as poor coverage.
